Session 3: The Fall

We are going back to the basics this week as we talk about the fall of man. Where did sin come from? Why do we sin? It all started with Adam and Eve. This week we will see that God desires the best for us all. Man was placed in a perfect place and we messed it up. We are tempted by satan to fall away from God. Because we have a sin nature, we try and justify our sins. We listen to satan as he twists the scripture and he influences our lives. But, as we learned this weekend at DNOW, just as obedience to God is a choice, it is also a choice we make when we fall for the deception of the devil. Don't forget, there are sins of commission as well as the ones we forget about, the sins of ommission. One true sign of salvation is the fact that when we sin we are loaded down with guilt and shame. A lost person feels no shame for their sins. The only way to restore a broken relationship is through THE WAY, Jesus Christ. He is standing there arms wide open to welcome us back when we have let Him down. Good lesson!

I think we all, at times, fall into the thought process that Eve had. So often, our focus is on the restrictions God gives us rather than the freedoms God gives us. Eve’s attitude grew negative while conversing with the serpent. So much that, she began to recall restrictions God hadn’t even made (touching the fruit). If we’re not careful we (even Christians) can fall into these same snares, and at times, even set these snares Have you ever heard a Christian say “As a Christian I can’t have any fun.” “Go to church, read the bible, pray—these are the only things I can do!” Lost people, also see too many restrictions in the Christian life. Perhaps you yourself have minimized the liberty and joy that is found in Christ, and the Christian walk. Have you maximized the restrictions that God puts on us? Don’t forget, there were a multitude of trees that God allowed Adam and Eve to eat of. Could it be that we aren’t reaching the lost because of our negative attitudes? It’s quite possible that our witnessing doesn’t work because we focus on what people must lose in Christ rather than what they have to gain in Christ.

It’s important that our students know that everything went South when Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s instruction in the Garden, and that we all became sinners at that point in time. Sin in our lives is not what makes us sinners, but rather we sin because we are sinners. More important, is that our students realize that there is hope! Because of Jesus Christ’s one act of obedience, it is possible for all to be righteous. MINIMIZE the restrictions, MAXIMIZE the freedoms.
