You're Invited!

Ever been invited to a wedding? In the bible belt we are pretty traditional when it comes to weddings. However if you have more progressive friends (another term is Yankees) they often have a big celebration at the church including adult beverages. It's a cultural thing, as we see in the story of the Wedding at Cana. Jesus and His disciples were invited and they were serving wine, until the embarrassment of embarrassments happened and they ran out. See any other cultural issue going on? Is it important or should we just read it through our S. GA eyes?

Not sure what angle Im teaching from. I know this is a lesson on Jesus's minstery, but we all know that the wine will be brought up. Did not really want to teach from a culture since but more from what the Bible teaches. Was it actually wine(todays wine) (We talked about this early this year). Need help!

Well, I would say it is definitely fermented wine, hence the saving of poor wine near the end. The Bible does not say to not drink wine, but just like food, don't consume too much. There is a clear prohibition against drunkenness, as well as gluttony. Funny how in this culture we tolerate the one and frown on the other.
What about his discourse with Mary? “What has this concern of yours to do with Me, women".
Sounds kinda disrespectful. However, here is why culture is important. When used in direct address, "Woman" was not a term of disrespect but of honor. This is the "Interpret" part of the 3 keys in Bible Study. Observe (read), Interpret (to whom and what is the text saying), Application (how do we apply this truth to our life)

I think the key is vs 11. It's too easy to get hung up in the details of the miracle when that's not what it was about. The story is not about a wedding, women, or wine. The story is here to show the first demonstration of the Glory of the Messiah. The Disciples got it. If I was teaching I think that's what I would focus on. Jesus is who He says He is. Now if He is, what does that mean to us?

Check this link out I found yesterday. It is the HCSB Study Bible. Great web based Bible study program with commentary. Good notes on this lesson. http://beta.mystudybible.com/

One thing to note on the alcohol is the fact that we as a church, through our church covenant(which I think is not known by most members)have agreed "to abstain from the sale of and use of intoxicating drinks as a beverage." This is another reason why we should abstain from drinking. I agree that the subject will come up in class at some point. I have always been taught that as a christian I sin when I cause my brother to stumble due to my actions. What think ye? Billy
