Jesus Calling of the Disciples

I'm not sure that you should spend this entire week meditating on vs 11. Who is going to Heaven? A: Disciples of Christ. What is a Disciple of Christ? A: I could give you my description, but I think you should get it from the Bible yourself. And this weeks lesson is a great start. Too often we focus on what kind of person He chose, I think because it makes us feel better about our self. No matter if it was a simple fisherman, tax collector or whoever they all have common characteristics as Disciples of Christ and vs 11 is the first one we see in scripture.
I'm currently reading David Platt's book Radical. I just started it yesterday, but so far it is one of those that makes me look around and wonder how many Disciples are in our church? Do our students know the cost? Have I really counted the cost? Or have they and we bought into American Christianity dominated by self-advancement, self esteem, self sufficiency, individualism, and materialism. Is what we are teaching the Biblical Gospel? Riddle me this, did Jesus attract more Disciples or run more off?

Hey Paul, thanks I needed a good laugh this morning. I'v just started a study on living free, breaking the cycle of defeat. Probley should have waited to do this study since I just started cc. Not been a good week. Anyway i cant stop laugh --- i love the vote box question. Get back later with comment on this weeks lesson.

Paul, I love the videos! Your question about Jesus and disciples is thought provoking. I feel sure I know the answer, but not sure enough to answer yet. I enjoy the hard questions. They challenge who we are and what we believe, and even the way we behave. If I were to answer the poll question with a "no", would you question my spirituality: or my salvation even? Just wondering...........

John, no as in I want answer it, or no....I would never question your salvation...OK, that's wrong, I would if you started living a life of continual sin Rom 6:2...wait, I probably would anyway cause I'm judgmental.

Sorry Paul, what I meant was, if I didn't think much of Billy, would my spiritual maturity, character, salvation etc., be in question?

The poll is anonymous so I can't tell who or how anyone votes. Therefore it's just like our sin we can keep it hidden, not that your answer would be a sin, or would it?

We are camping this week end so I get to teach our small group this Sunday, and I can't wait. Look at Luke 9:23,57-62. These passages expound 5:11 & 29. The reason these Disciples left everything is because they were asked to by Jesus. It's the same request, I'm sorry, command given to us. (by no means am I saying we have to sell everything and live in a box. However, what are we chasing? The American dream or Christ the Savior)

I know, I know, I come across too hard sometimes, but I do have the ability to say when I'm wrong. So I'm challenging anyone to prove me wrong on this statement:

"American Christianity, that is seen in our church, is not Biblical Discipleship. And only Disciples of Christ will enter heaven."

Enter this contest by debate or in writing and you pick the judges from our church. If I am chosen as looser I will do what ever you request as long as it's not sinful.
Love you guys!

I can't wait until next week to see the poll question. I hope we get to vote on the rest of the staff in the same way.

We don't do that here. The poll was an encouragement for my man Billy Gill. If you have something to say to Stacey tell him yourself.

I've got an idea. Let's start encouraging people before they leave!

Paul A. Drawdy said...

That's a great idea! 1 TH 5:12 Lets encourage all believers whether paid or not, Members or not, but Brothers & Sisters in Christ. If you find ones that you can not encourage then Matt 18:15 is the command. Any other act is un-biblical.

Paul A. Drawdy said...

If we can't do either of the above options, lets gather and watch the "I Love Chicken" Video again!

Matt. 18:15 would apply to most, but 1 Timothy 5:19 would apply to leaders.

Paul A. Drawdy said...

Actually 18:15 applies to all, not most. 5:19 is carried out through the process of 18:15 but is used in receiving an accusation for the administration of 18:15.

My statement reflected the idea of not being able to encourage someone based on the idea of someone committing a sin against you which would lead to your feelings of displeasure towards that person. However, if you have an accusation against someone then that is a different context.
